PostSubject: Planning the Fall Meet 2012!    Mon Jul 30, 2012 12:41 pm

There has been some talk about a fall meet so we need to get some ideas going. Chris mentioned to me to have it when the leaves are changing. Anyone know when the hometown subaru meet is? Would be cool just to have a cruise to it and back if it is in the same time period when the leaves are changing.

The hometown show is the weekend before bridgeday. But we need to make sure it's still going to happen this year.

Anyone know of any nice locations we could all go to or drive through to see the color of the leaves? Your imput on some new roads would be very helpful in planning this next trip.

I would like to go up to Spruce Knob which is the highest point in the state. For those of you who havent been there its a site to see. Just never been there in the fall. Just trying to find some roads that we could all take that wouldnt be to far out of anyones way.

I have heard that the road to the top of there is all gravel. I don't care but others might. But I would also like to go up there.

Only SUVs should consider the trip to Spruce Knob.

I was on a sightseeing drive in my new 05 LGT when I thought that going there would be a good idea. We had already been to a number of memorable sights that day, and that was on my list. Somewhere partway up the mountain, when the pavement ended, I knew this wasn't going to be fun. The "road" became a variously rutted rock-strewn path where I had to drive around things I knew I'd tear something up underneath on. I got to the top, covered in a find dust that likely remained on and in the car forever.

As I slowly inched my new GT down that road, fearing both for my tires and my undercarriage, I vowed never to go there again.

There was nothing to see... no memorable vistas from the top, no neat scenic foliage or, really, anything worth going to that miserable place that justified that trek except being able to say I had been there. Frankly, I can't remember any other place I've ever been that was less rewarding for the effort, than Spruce Knob, WV.

Here's some links to check out for ideas.

http://wvbyways.com
http://www.openroadjourney.com/roads/WestVirginia.asp
http://www.motorcycleroads.com/Routes/West-Virginia_124.html
http://wvmountainrider.com/default.aspx
http://www.motorcycleroads.us/states/wv.html

Yes, I know several of these are for motorcyclists, but it can still give you some ideas. I've read that Rt.33 and Rt. 250 are good routes. I think it would be fun to go up to the Seneca rocks area or the Blackwater Falls and Canaan area. I don't think I would be too keen myself to go to Spruce Knob either. It's a long and narrow gravel road that seem to take forever to get to the top when I went several years ago. Rt. 60 is also a fun road as well.

Canaan valley to dolly sods then take a small gravel road down right near seneca rocks. It was a neat drive in montana van in the rain. Would be a little rough in my STI but I could take it. If the leaves were changing it would be beautiful.

I was talking about a road from dolly sods down to seneca rocks. Not the road to Spruce Knob. The road through dolly sods is also gravel. I thought there were some nice overlooks at dolly sods.

So heres the thing, we could meet @ flatwoods like normal. Take the short shoot to the top of webster springs, from there head to elkins and on into black water falls. Not trying to cut the southern group out at all. But the Northern group has pretty easy access to blackwater. Amazing restaurants to even better views. Those parks are alqays crowded.

There is the huge overlook on 68 towards cumberland. Which would be riding 79 n to 68 e and then come the back way into davis wv( blackwaterfalls). These are some ideas.

Yea the enterance to spruce knob off of RT 33 is paved all the way to the top lookout.

This is a route i was just thinking about for all of us to do. It mite be a little long but its prob the last big meet we do before winter. Feel free to change it in any way.

We all meet off I-79 in weston area.
Head east on route 33 all the way to Seneca Rocks
From there head south on 33 10 miles to the road to the top of spruce knob.
----
There is a Really good mom and pop restaurant at the enterance to the top we could eat at if everyone would want to. Its 100% better than the last place we stopped at they have home made desserts and all.
----
After Spruce knob head south on RT 28 to RT 66 passing through Green Bank ( where the big radio telescope is) then down through Cass. and headed past snowshoe ending up on RT 219 right where we ate dinner last month.

From there if we had time we could head across the senic highway or just split up are differant ways from there.

Sorry i have it all maped out in my head but dont have a map to post up on here yet.
Mapquest says from Weston to the end at snowshoe is 160 miles.

We also have to start thinking of a date we could all get together again. They say Fall will start 2-3 weeks early this year.

What about putting it up for vote? I would suggest putting the Saturdays in September and the first half October up for vote and whatever day gets the majority vote is the day we go on. :-)

I say we lock down a route 1st, then lock down the dates. Say we wanted to drive to bridge day(just an ex.) we would be restricted by that 2nd or 3rd weekend when the have it every year. Have we narrowed the routes down to vote on yet ?

I'm game for just about anything. If its a road that's not horribly destroyed from big trucks/weather I'm there.

I have found you'll have to drive some shitty road to get to good road anywhere in WV. even to get to 150 there were some BAD spots on 55.

I am game, I have a lot of the conflicting shows, etc on it. I know that Sunday the 23rd of september, WV streets is going to do a cruise out route 50, then down to parsons, and back up to coopers rock. All are welcome, I need to get that posted up here too.

160 ish miles IIRC. will get a better post going today on it... 20 MPG. that's 8 gallons 15 mpg that's 11 gal.

Call me crazy but a shorter cruise is more of a meet than a car cruise. Last steel city stangs cruise i came back to clarksburg and then drove out to cool springs, and then drove home, was a 500 mile day. ... that's a long day lol.

Well it doesn't sound that long after you get it down to "160 miles", but I think short cruises with a good "meet" afterwards are the best kind. Get more time to get to know everyone! But that's just my opinion, when I'm on the bike I love a lengthy cruise.

^ Yes, its just if Hometown Subaru does a show again that will be Oct. 13th and Bridge Day is Oct.20 if thats important to anyone...lol. So it leaves us with the dates of Sept. 29th-30th or Oct. 6th-7th. Need to just do a POLL and see what everyone votes on.

The POLL is now up and running so cast your vote on which day you would like the meet/ cruise to be on. Prob close it down at the end of the month. Hopefully by then everyone would have had enough time to vote.
