The only planned stop is at Spruce Knob to take pics and junk. But as you can see the route has plenty of scenery so stopping a lot wont be necessary. My thoughts were to leave about 8 or 9 in the morning and just stop wherever for food. Should only have to make one gas stop if everyone is full at the start. Could end in Charleston at Quaker Steak & Lube or something like that.

That is a long drive but then us northern guys would have to drive back from charleston after that.

I think a good idea would be to stay near the center of the state. Near Seneca Rocks are some nice roads then maybe we could go up to Mount Storm then take 50 back? Its a fun ride on the bike and Ive always wanted to take the wrx. We could start and end near weston/sutton area.

Here's an idea let me know what you think.

Why don't we meet in marlinton. It's about in the middle and we could hit the scenic highway.

I know it's a bit of a drive but, we could all meet there eat, bs, whatever and leave from there and hit the scenic highway for a good cruise up through there. The good thing about the scenic highway is that it's not patrolled by police and it's a beautiful, twisty drive.

That is one LONG drive, a good drive to be sure, but likely longer than many will want to take with company. I've done the same drive in my car many times, but it always includes stops along the way for any number of reasons. The Scenic Highway is not only a good ride, there are great stops along it to stretch, look, etc.

However, these are two lane roads, tough enough for spirited driving given the traffic always present, let alone a convoy however small. Some locals along the way seem to always be looking for an excuse to race or intimidate, others just poke along no matter what.

As for Spruce Knob... Shocked ... I made the mental note to never go there again unless it was in an SUV. My stock suspensioned 05 LGT with 215/45/17 shoes was constantly threatened, and I am certain my new 11 WRX wouldn't survive the summit stretch without issue. Unless things have changed in the past few years the pavement ends well before the top and the "road" becomes a stony rutted obstacle course. It was summer when I was there and the dust from the dirt road completely, completely, covered the car and got into every seam... probably some is still in it somewhere Smile.

Good rides abound in West BG, not just for cars but for bikes as well. WV is gaining a deserved reputation for quietly harboring more than its share of riding goodness. There are few roads left I haven't explored in one or the other, or both. But collaborative outings that accommodate everyone isn't going to happen. We are a relatively small state in appearance, but the topography separates us in practice. So trying to please everyone usually boils down to not happening. Defacto divisions are Northern peeps and Southern peeps, with a couple sub-divisions in each.

But in spirit I'm with you here... I'M SICK OF WINTER!! I can't wait to be able to visit all my favored roads, and find where unknown turns go. However, expecting our SO's to be as thrilled as we are with long days in the saddle might be cause to include them in the planning. Good long rides can turn into painfully silent rides unless there is some gold for them at the end of that riding rainbow.

Thnx for the input guys. Like I said it was just a thought and a rough route or area that I thought would be nice to drive. I kinda like the pick a mid point and two convoys meeting up.

I like the ideas that are flowing through here and it seems like we all have a good idea of what we want to do just not where. This is just an idea so let me know what you think.

I love the idea of hitting the scenic highway (I'm originally from that area) and checking out the views and everything it has to offer. It is a bit of a drive but, its about the same from north to south. If we meet somewhere near the scenic highway

From charleston its 130 miles and 2hrs 45 min
morgantown its 134 miles 3hrs and 4 min
clarksburg its 125 miles 2 hrs and 35 min
parkersburg its 197 miles 3hrs and 50 min

But... if we wanted to meet somewhere closer and go from there we could meet in sutton or that area and make the drive from there. It's ~ 75 miles (about 1 hr and 30 min) from sutton to the scenic highway but, on the way there are some different places that we can stop as well on the way. The cranberry glades and falls of hills creek which are both on the route. The drive is pretty amazing it takes us down 19 to summersville to route 39 all the way to the scenic highway. RT39 is a good road and not many people travel it since is in bfe and the ones that do drive like mad men so it wouldn't be to hard to keep a convoy together since there are no traffic lights and no stops unless we decide to take a break. Like I said before this place is beautiful nothing but green everywhere and a nice strip of pristine pavement that looks like it belongs there.

I wasn't trying to take over your thread pat. I just wanted to throw out some options and see what people thought.

It is a bit of a drive but, hopefully we can find something good to eat and have some good clean fun while were at it.

Shew knows his roads Smile

Flatwoods is just a hop and a skip from Sutton, and has a lot more "stuff" like food and fuel. Sutton has the dam area for scenery. FWIW my favorite restaurant is in Sutton... Cimeno's.

But Rt39 is great all the way into VA. However... Gauley Bridge can end anyone's good day unless you pay STRICT attention to the speed limit. In the same vein of CAUTION, following Shew's route, is much of rt19, especially the portion we would be travelling. They have an almost international reputation for being rabid about speed and traffic tickets.

Rt 150, the Scenic Highway, was an eyeopener my first time there. I was on my bike, and as I looked out over that expanse of WV mountains it was the first time this country boy saw a place in WV that I conceeded I might get lost in. Awesome every time. The stops along the way there, which Shew mentioned, are reasons in themselves to drive the drive.

That said, I'm getting anxious to hit whatever trail emerges here. This morning the biggest flock of Robins I've ever seen populated the trees and roof tops around me here in Kanawha City. Spring is not far away.... in fact, my iPhone Big Day app says it is now only 55 days away. Better weather will come sooner.

how about April 9 or July 16. Both are Saturdays. We do the group drives. The northern guys meet and somewhere and the southern guys do the same. We meet at the town that is outside of the Senic Highway then cruise it and to anyother place we want to. Then part ways. That way no one has to drive the whole state in one day. Cept maybe those martinsburg guys if they want to come. How does this sound with everyone. We will need a northern corrordinator and a sourthern one. Any voulenteers.

Hell I can be the guy for teh souf if needed.

Those are both good days but, hopefully we don't get rained out.

So how about we say april 9 and if we get rained out july 16.

I know not everyone is going to be able to go but, if you really want to go (i hope everyone does) try to make plans for doing this both weekends.

oh crap. Its looking like I will only be able to make it to the meeting point and saying hi to everyone then heading on to DC. I have to be there for the start of a concert at 6. I was hoping I would be able to do both but its not looking that way. If I cant then I will be there for the next one.
